A Closer Look at Cervical Cancer: Symptoms, and Solutions

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus (womb) that connects to the vagina. Most cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. While HPV infection is common, in most cases, the body's immune system can clear the virus without any long-term effects. However, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can lead to the development of cervical cancer over time.

In January, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners have the perfect opportunity to increase public awareness of cervical cancer and the need to get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV).One can get involved in the cervical cancer awareness campaign by wearing the teal ribbon.

In Kenya, women between the ages of 25 and 49 are the subject of a policy statement that addresses cervical screening. HIV-negative women undergo screening every five years, while HIV-positive women do it once a year.

 SYMPTOMS FOR CERVICAL CANCER

It commonly takes 10 to 20 years from the time an HPV infection first appears to the development of CIN, which is followed by cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer frequently progresses slowly, first through precancerous alterations in the cervix's cells and then into invasive malignancy.

Early detection and treatment of cervical cancer depend on routine screening procedures like the Pap smear (Pap test) and HPV testing because the disease may not exhibit symptoms in its early stages.

WHAT CAUSES CERVICAL CANCER

  1. Infection with HPV, e.g., warts.
  2. First sexual experience at an early age.
  3. Multiple sexual partners.
  4. Repeated sexually transmitted diseases.
  5. Health conditions that lower one's immunity, e.g., HIV

As cervical cancer progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (such as bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause)
  • Pelvic pain.
  • Pain during intercourse.
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

However, these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cervical cancer, so it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Can a man infect a lady with HPV?

Yes one can!! Having sex with a person who is infected with HPV can expose you to the virus. During intercourse, it can also spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact. Even if an individual with HPV shows no symptoms, they might still infect others.

Can one get married to a HPV-positive person?

Yes one can because the majority of sexually active couples transmit HPV until the infection is suppressed by the immune system. It is unlikely that partners who engage in sexual intimacy exclusively will spread the same virus to one another.

Cervical Cancer Prevention

The three most crucial things you can do to help prevent cervical cancer are to get screened for HPV, get screening tests on a regular basis, and see your doctor again if the findings of a screening test are abnormal.

It is also important to practice safe sex and HPV vaccination.

TREATMENT

Treatment for cervical cancer is based on a number of variables, such as the cancer's stage, the age and general health of the woman, and her preferences. Treatment options could involve radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, or a mix of these. Advances in cervical cancer screening, early detection, and therapy have greatly improved the prognosis.

Praying for courage and healing is also advised for those who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

SUGGESTIBLE FOODS FOR A HEALTHY CERVIX

  •  Avocados
  •  Chickpeas
  • Lentils

  • Broccoli
  • Bell peppers
  • Almonds milk
  • Liver
  • Mushrooms
